Kampot SRP MP Mu Sochua, who is currently visiting the US, was invited by a US Congress commission (Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, TLHRC) to testify on the human rights condition in Cambodia.
The US Congress commission issued its announcement at the end of the past week and indicated that Mrs. Mu Sochua, MP of the Sam Rainsy Party, as well as representatives of the Licadho human rights group and the Community Lecal Education Center (CLEC) are invited to testify on the human rights situation in Cambodia to the US Congress Human Rights commission.
The announcement also indicated that the hearing is planned for 10 September 2009, and it will include testimonials by Mrs. Mu Sochua, Dr. Pung Chiv Kek of Licadho, and Mr. Moeun Tola of CLEC. The discussion will also focus on the 2001 land law, the human rights issues in Cambodia, and the various recent lawsuits brought up by the government against its critics, like the case of Mrs. Mu Sochua. The hearing will also raise the issue of political pressure imposed on journalists and opposition activists, and the current labor law which is applied sporadically only. It also indicated that the Cambodian government failed to properly put into application the 2001 land law.
About all the issues cited above, the Cambodian government used to reject any criticisms on human rights issues it received from various countries.
