On 17 September, the spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party indicated that the condemnation statement by the Cambodian National Assembly (NA) against Mrs. Mu Sochua for raising human rights issues in Cambodia at the US Congress is merely an attempt to hide [Hun Sen regime’s] misdeeds.
This reaction came after two Cambodian NA committees - the foreign affair committee and the human rights committee – issued a joint statement condemning the speech given by SRP MP Mu Sochua regarding human rights issues to the US Congress’ Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission hearing.
The NA’s statement indicated: “[We] condemn all actions taken by Mrs. Mu Sochua who provided false testimony with the aim of confusing the national and international opinion.”
SRP MP Yim Sovann, SRP spokesman, told RFA that: “The truth about human rights violations in Cambodia is not a mystery.”
Yim Sovann added: “The constitution stipulated the holding of a national congress. Now, let’s set up a congress, and let’s raise of these issues, and ask whether [people] have these rights or not? If the victimized people answer that they have [no] rights, the government should accept the truth, and it should bring in reforms and change its own policy so that social injustice does not linger like this.”
On 10 September 2009, SRP MP Mu Sochua gave her testimony to the US Congress’ Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in Washington DC in which she discussed about human rights violations and the violations of the freedom of expression that are taking place in Cambodia currently.
Mrs Mu Sochua was joined in this hearing by Dr. Pung Chiv Kek, President of the human rights group Licadho, and Mr. Moeun Tola, the labor director of the Community Legal Education Center (CLEC) NGO.
MP Cheam Yeap from the ruling CPP party said, in regards to Mrs. Mu Sochua’s testimony: “She raised about democracy moving backward, (2) this is also the case for human rights, and (3) the lifting of her immunity. In reality, everything that we did was done according to the law.”
Nevertheless, Mrs. Mu Sochua confirmed to RFA that the US Secretary of State [Mrs. Hillary Clinton] will send a high level US delegation to visit Cambodia soon, this delegation will also review the possibility of attaching various conditions to aids provided by this Superpower.
