Sar Rith, a reporter for the Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper, sued Chhim Sambath, an official of the Kandal Stung district, for disinformation.
During a radio broadcast about the current investigations on illegal sand dredging in this area, Chhim Sambath, an official of the Kandal Stung district, gave out details of Sar Rith’s private life and that of his brother-in-law who lives in the district. Considering that these declarations would affect his job, Sar Rith decided to sue. This is the first time that a reporter dares to sue a government official. Chhim Sambath declined to comment on this issue.
The human rights group Adhoc NGO welcomes the fact that a private citizen has the courage to confront the government, but Adhoc believes that the chance of justice being rendered is very slim.
